SLDC – South Lakeland House

In 2018 we were engaged by SLDC for their project to re-develop the Grade II Kendal Town Hall and adjoining three storey South Lakeland House offices.

The project aim was primarily to relocate the Council reception and associated front-end public contact areas to a more prominent and accessible location within the Town Hall.

The relocation of the public facing areas would allow South Lakeland House to be re-developed to provide consolidated council office accommodation on the First floor, releasing space on the Second and Ground floor to be leased to Start Up businesses, to provide income for the Council and to support the local economy.

The previous dated entrance foyer was to be replaced with a new double height glazed atrium space with living ‘green’ roof.  Internal windows were opened out at first floor level within the Atrium to allow visual connectivity with the shared café space below.   KPP Architects worked as part of our team for this element of the scheme, providing architectural design and construction support.

The relocation of this vital Council service required careful consideration. Prior to starting works, extensive collaboration took place with SLDC Team leaders via workshops, 1:1 interviews and digital survey.

The existing offices were disjointed, with several level changes reflecting the different ages of construction. Part of our brief was to create a cohesive space which was easy to navigate, where the Council could operate effectively within an open plan footprint.

The design scheme reflects the location of the offices within the Lake District National Park, with imagery and finishes reflecting the natural theme. The offices were completed in April 2022 and have been very well received by visitors and staff.
